National Cancer Institute Designation

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) first designated the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center in 1990. A designation awarded to only thirty-nine Comprehensive Cancer Centers nationwide, UNC Lineberger is the only public Comprehensive Cancer Center in North Carolina to have this designation.

Facilities receiving designation status from NCI must:

  1. Demonstrate expertise in three areas: laboratory, clinical, and behavioral and population-based research;

  2. Initiate and conduct early-phase, innovative clinical trials and participate in the NCI’s cooperative groups by providing leadership and recruiting patients for trials; and

  3. Conduct activities in outreach and education and provide information on advances in healthcare for both healthcare professionals and the public.

The NCI’s website provides an accurate, up-to-date listing of all designated cancer centers. To view the listing, click the logo.
