Research Interests
Currently, I serve as the Director of the Multidisciplinary Thoracic Oncology Program at the University of North Carolina and Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center (LCCC). My primary research involves clinical trials in both non-small cell (NSCLC) as well as small cell lung cancer (SCLC). I currently serve as the Principal Investigator for several national as well as investigator-initiated LCCC trials examining the optimal chemotherapeutic approach to advanced, metastatic NSCLC. In collaboration with colleagues in our Department of Radiation Oncology, we have developed aggressive and innovative approaches in stage III NSCLC involving high-dose conformal radiation therapy in combination with systemic chemotherapy. Our results have attracted national attention and will be explored in a national trial in the Cancer and Acute Leukemia Group B (CALGB) of which we are active members. I also chair a national trial exploring novel chemotherapeutic approaches in stage I and II NSCLC as pre-operative therapy. Small cell lung cancer has also been a focus of my research activity including novel combination regimens in extensive stage SCLC and the study of a new compound, BBR3464, as second-line therapy in patients with refractory disease.
I am also currently involved with the American College of Chest Physicians Lung Cancer Guidelines Committee and serve on the Advisory Board of Lungcancer.org.
