Clinical Interests
My clinical interest in thrombosis and hemostasis, which applies coagulation biochemistry to the diagnosis and care of patients, is a reflection of my translational research interests in hematology. Our laboratory has been focused on understanding the role of tissue factor - the 'trigger' for coagulation - in the pathogenesis of coagulation disorders. Better assays and clinical studies are needed in this area to ultimately determine whether the tissue factor pathway may be exploited in the treatment of bleeding disorders (e.g. with the use of FVIIa) or as a target for anti-thrombotic agents. More recently, we have begun to use quantitative proteomics approaches to characterize platelets and microparticles.
Research Interests
I have been actively involved in teaching students, residents, and fellows, activities which have been recognized by several Departmental; and Divisional teaching awards (see above). Mentoring fellows in clinical and research activities continues to be a major interest, and to this end, I have been pleased to assume Program Directorship of the Departmental T32 Training grant in hematology at UNC.
