CCEP Predoctoral Fellowships in Cancer Prevention and Control
Overview
The CCEP sponsors five predoctoral fellows. Applications are accepted
each year. Details of the fellowship and the application process are outlined
below.
Eligibility
Applicants must be
graduate students with an MS, MPH, MSPH, or an equivalent level of training,
who are currently enrolled in doctoral
programs at UNC-Chapel Hill, primarily in the School of Public Health
and other Health Affairs Schools.
Applicants may be at any point in their doctoral career, although successful applicants are usually at least in their second year. A clear commitment to cancer prevention and control research is paramount for all applicants. Prior experience in cancer prevention and control research is a plus.
Fellows should have an identified primary CCEP mentor. The primary mentor is usually chair of the applicant’s dissertation committee but should at least be a member of the dissertation committee. For fellows who have not formed a doctoral committee, the primary mentor is often the fellow’s faculty academic advisor.
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents. The UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill are equal opportunity employers and encourage applications from women and minorities.
Training
The CCEP trains, mentors, and develops fellows through two major activities:
a specialized core curriculum and hands-on mentored research experience. Throughout,
the CCEP emphasizes flexible training that is tailored to meet each fellow's
needs, as well as a multidisciplinary and collaborative approach to cancer prevention

Support
Stipends. Predoctoral stipends are $22,000 per
year. The stipend level will not change during the fellowship. With
special permission, fellows may also work (and receive compensation
for) up to 15 hours per week on projects that do not overlap with CCEP
projects.
Allowances. Each predoctoral fellow receives up to $19,000 per year in allowances, including $12,000 for tuition, $3,000 for travel, and $4,000 for research and other expenses. The allowance level will not change during the fellowship. Each year, fellows submit a budget plan for their allowances. Some re-budgeting within with the travel and research/other expenses categories is permitted. Tuition support can only be used for that purpose.
The CCEP tuition allowance is sufficient to pay in-state student tuition and fees at the UNC Chapel Hill School of Public Health. Due to recent increases in tuition costs, the CCEP tuition allowance is sufficient to pay about 90% of the out-of-state student tuition and fees. Other CCEP allowance dollars, however, may be used to pay tuition and fees.
CCEP fellows are encouraged to travel to and participate in appropriate meetings (such as the annual American Society of Preventive Oncology national meeting) and short courses.
Research and other expenses may include books, some equipment, software, biostatistical consulting, research assistance, et al.
Benefits. Predoctoral fellows receive health insurance coverage through the student health insurance program. Fellows receive other student benefits in accordance to their registration status. Parking eligibility and application is processed through the student’s department.
Length of Support. CCEP predoctoral fellowships are awarded for one year with expectation of renewal for a second year. First-year fellows must re-apply for a second year and compete in the same pool with new candidates.
Application
Process for 2010-2011 Fellowships. The application
deadline for 2010-2011 fellowships will be 5 p.m. Friday, February 12,
2010. Review
of applications by the Training Advisory Committee will take place during
March. Awards are expected to be announced in early April.
Application Package. Applicants submit a curriculum vitae, a two page (double-spaced) synopsis of the proposed research, and at least two letters of support, including one from the primary CCEP faculty mentor. If the primary CCEP mentor is not the dissertation advisor, then one letter of support should come from the dissertation advisor. If the applicant has not yet formed a dissertation committee, then one letter of support should come from the faculty advisor. The dissertation advisor and/or faculty advisor do not need to be CCEP faculty. Letters of support should be hard copy and electronic copy (PDF). Faculty should email the letters of support directly to Dr. O'Malley. The electronic copy need not be signed if the hardcopy has been.
